Does Size Really Matter?

Posted on February 9, 2015. Filed under: Email Marketing, Email Results, Marketing, Small Business | Tags: , , , , , , , |

E-Mail MarketingWhen it comes to your email list, does the size of your list really matter? As a business owner, coach or consultant, you probably already know about the importance of having and growing an email list, but did you know that it’s not the size of your email list that is most important, but the quality of the people on your list? As the saying goes, it is better to have an email list of 100 interested prospects, than 1,000 uninterested people.

However, you still want to work on increasing the size of your list because you want to make sure your message is reaching a wider audience each month. Your goal should be to grow your email list with individuals who are interested in what you have to say, and what you have to offer. So the big question is how can you effectively and efficiently grow your email list?

Here are 6 tips to grow your email list:

Offline:

  1. Events– whenever you conduct an event (workshop, seminar, etc.), or if you are presenting at an event, be sure to collect the email addresses of the attendees (or participants who expressed an interest in learning more) . Be sure to disclosure that by signing your list or providing their information they are agreeing to receiving emails from you.
  2. Text Messages– Consider adding a text to join your email list option. Now-a-days people don’t leave home without their smart phones, so making it easy for them to join your email list by simply texting a word to a number and then providing their email address makes it easy to join your email list.
  3. QR Codes- Consider adding QR Codes to your marketing material (business cards, brochures, flyers, etc.) It’s another way to make it easy for people to join your email list. However, I personally don’t really use QR Codes and haven’t gotten a lot of people through this method, but it is still something you could consider.

Online:

  1. Webinars– a great list building strategy is webinars. When you conduct webinars, people have to give their information to sign up for the webinar. Just add a disclosure that signing up for this webinar also gives you permission to add them to your email list.
  2. Lead Pages– Another great online list building strategy is to create a lead magnet (eBook, White Paper, Case Study, Checklist, etc.), and have people enter their information on a specially designed lead page that talks about how great your lead magnet is, and why they need to give you their contact information so they can receive your awesome lead magnet. This technique works really well because you know that you are getting people who are interested in the content that you have to offer
  3. Social Media– Encourage people who follow you on social media to sign-up for your email list so that they can get additional and maybe even exclusive information that you provide only through email. This technique works really well, because if you already have a following on social media, it just makes sense that the next logically step for them is to receive your emails. This also allows the relationship to get stronger when they are not only connected to you via social media, but also receiving your emails.

Do You Have a Business M.A.P.?

Posted on November 11, 2014. Filed under: Business, Business Planning, Email Results, Marketing, Marketing Plan, Small Business | Tags: , , , , , , , |

Blog Image- Business MAPDo you have a business M.A.P.?  Wondering what a business M.A.P. is, and why you would need one?  It’s a Marketing Action Plan (M.A.P.), and you need one in order to take your business from one place to the next.

When you need to go somewhere, and you are not sure how to get there, you need directions.  You can use a map to get the directions, now a days that map is within your GPS either in your smartphone or in your car.  Well just like the map in your GPS, you need a M.A.P. for your business that is designed to take your business from point A to point B.  The destination may be different for each business, but the need to have a plan and take action is always necessary to get your business from point A to point B.

Similar to when you are following the directions in your GPS, you may at times need to make a u-turn or change routes, but the overall map in the GPS is there to guide you and get you to your final destination.  In fact, after we have made several miss steps or u-turns we love when we hear the words, “you have reached your destination“.  With a business MAP, you may not hear a GPS system say, “you have reached your destination”, but you know you have reached your destination when you achieve the business goal that you set out to achieve.

For example, if your business goal is to increase your sales by 20%, you need to create a M.A.P. on how to get there.  Instead of turns on highways and streets, the M.A.P. includes turns you can make in your marketing activity that can help you to reach your destination, so in the case of increasing sales, a M.A.P. could look something like this:

Point A-  Sales are 50 units a month

Step 1-  Increase leads by doing the following actions:

a.  Attending more networking events

b.  Placing ads on Social Media

c.  Creating an email campaign

d.  Creating an AdWord campaign

Step 2-  Increase referrals by doing the following actions:

a.  Joining a referral networking group

b.  Looking for referral partners

c.  Creating a referral partner program

d.  Having a referral incentive

Step 3-  Increase sales conversations by doing the following actions:

a.  Having monthly webinars

b.  Having monthly teleseminars

c.  Having monthly in-person events

d.  Having more one-on-one meetings with prospects

Step 4-  Increase your conversion rate by doing the following actions:

a.  Creating sales pages with good  content and strong calls to actions

b.  Creating emails with good content and strong call to actions

c.  Creating  videos with good content and strong call to actions

d.  Adding testimonials to your website and sales pages

Point B-  Measure the increase in sales

So as you can see the action that you take in your marketing action plan will determine the outcome of the destination of your business.  You can create a plan for each business goal that you have and make adjustments to the actions when necessary.

Have you created your business M.A.P.?  If so, what marketing activities do you include in order to reach your goals?

The Secret to Successful Email Marketing Campaigns

Posted on July 18, 2014. Filed under: Business, Email Marketing, Email Results, Marketing | Tags: , , , , , , |

The Secret to Successful Email Marketing CampaignsEmail Marketing should be a key element in your online marketing mix, but many business owners struggle to get success from their email marketing efforts, they send out enewsletters month after month, year after year, and get no real results.  However, on the other side of the coin other businesses seem to get AMAZING success from their email marketing campaigns.  We’ve heard stories of people sending out an email campaign and getting sooo many sales or inquiries within hours or even minutes of sending the email.  So what is the BIG secret in why some people are successful and others are not?  The answer is…….planning your email marketing campaigns, knowing your audience and providing the right content for your audience!

In order to be successful with email marketing, you have to know your audience (your target market).  The most successful email marketing campaigns are the ones in which the content provided is exactly what their audience needs and wants.  So how can you make sure your email marketing campaigns are successful?  Here are 6 ways to make sure you have successful email marketing campaigns:

  1. Create an email marketing plan–  Your email marketing plan needs to cover what, when, who, and how.  What type of emails are you going to send (i.e. enewsletters, autoresponders, stand-alone, drip campaigns, etc.)?  When are you are going to send out your emails  (Mondays, Tuesdays, 10:00 am, 2:00 pm etc.)?  Who are going to send the email to (customers, clients, prospects, leads, referrals, etc.), and how often you are going to send the emails (monthly, weekly, daily, etc.)?  Putting a plan together helps you to be clear on what you want to do with your email marketing and helps you to focus on getting the results.
  2. Know your target audience–  This is important for every aspect of your marketing and just as relevant for email marketing.  You have to understand the needs of your audience.  This is the only way that you will be able to accomplish #3 on this list, so take the time to know the specific demographics (age, gender, race, etc.) of your target market.  Be specific as possible.  The idea that your services or products is for everyone is the worst way to market your business and you will never be able to create effective marketing campaigns much less email marketing campaigns.  You also have to understand your target market’s psychographics (attitudes, tastes, preferences).  The more clear you are about these things the better your email marketing campaigns will be.
  3. Segment your email list  Making sure you have several email lists that are segmented based on type of person and or interests is a great way to segment your list. For example you should have a separate list for your customers/clients and then another list for your prospects.  That way you can target your emails specifically to promotions geared towards customers and then you can create another campaign geared towards prospects.  Statistics show that your customer list is your most valuable and profitable list because they have already purchased from your company (and hopefully had a good experience) and therefore you have a higher chance of getting repeat business from your current customers.  You want to treat this list differently than you would prospects who have not purchased from you yet.  On the other hand, it is also important to segment your list based on product or service purchased (or person’s interest).  For example, if a person purchased product or service A from you they may have different needs than someone who purchased product or service B from you, so differentiating them in your list can make a big difference in your marketing results.
  4. Create great content for each specific segment  Having great content is obvious, but having great content that serves your target audience is priceless.  For example if you have a list of people who opted in to receive email from you that are interested in service A, make sure that you are sending out a lot of relevant information about service A.  Information that people will find useful and interesting.  Sending out an email with all your services and products and being salesy does not serve your market.  You want to think how can I be the most helpful and engaging to my readers.  Studies show that having an informative blog post in your email and having people click a link to read more of the post is a great way to engage your audience.  Videos also work well in emails.  Having a screenshot of the video and then people can click on the image and/or a link to view the video is also a good audience engaging technique.
  5. Have a Strong Call To Action–  You want to direct people on what they should do.  Do  you want them to “call and make an appointment”, “click to learn more”, “stop by and visit”, etc.  Using strong calls to actions in your email marketing help your readers to take the necessary action.
  6. Be Consistent–  I always stress the importance of consistency when it comes to email marketing.  Make sure that you send out your email campaigns on a consistent basis.  If you don’t, people will forget about you and your company.  Consistency also helps for you to stay top of mind with your customer and prospects.  You can even set the expectation of frequency upfront by saying. “We will be sending you a weekly newsletter” or “We will be sending you a daily digest”, etc.  that way people already know when they sign-up how often they should expect to receive communication from you.  Then it will be up to you to consistently deliver on that expectation.

Are you using these strategies in your email marketing?  If not, what strategies would you add for successful email marketing campaigns?

4 Reasons Email Marketing is Key to Your Online Marketing Success

Posted on January 6, 2014. Filed under: Email Marketing, Email Results, Marketing | Tags: , , , , , |

Are you using online marketing to promote your business?
Is email marketing a part of your online marketing strategy?

Email Marketing Blog Post 1No matter what type of online marketing you engage in, blogging, social media, sales pages, podcasting, video marketing, etc.  You will find that one key element that can help in the success of your online marketing is Email Marketing.  Some people are under the impression that Email Marketing is dead and that nobody really reads email anymore.  Although it may be true that most of our inboxes are inundated with email messages, and it is getting harder and harder to get people’s attention in a crowded email box, email still plays an important role in our daily communication.

So why is email marketing so important to the success of your online marketing?  The simple answer is own, control, personalize, and act.  So let’s look at these four reasons in detail:

  1. You Own Your Email List–  Compared to other online marketing mediums, email is one of the only mediums that allows you to own the information that you collect on your contacts.   Therefore, the goal of your email list is to own a large list of people who are interested in what you have to say and are engaged with your brand.  The larger your list is with engaged, interested subscribers, the higher your chances of successful email marketing.  It is also important to use all of your online marketing channels to encourage your loyal followers, fans, etc to join your email list.   As the saying goes, the money is in your list!
  2. Control of the Visibility of your Content  compared to the social network platforms, email marketing gives you more control of who sees your information, and the actual information that they receive.  Almost on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis, some major social network is making changes to its algorithm, which influences, how, when or if your posts, tweets or whatever is being seen by the audience that you have on that network.  Therefore, there is limited control as to how much of your information that your audience will see.  Let’s face it, these networks are looking for ways to monetize every area, so the visibility of your posts will be less and less unless you plan to spend some advertising dollars.  Take control of how often and what information your followers see by consistently sending valuable email marketing campaigns (the keyword here is valuable).
  3. Personalization  Most online marketing efforts have a “one-to-many” feel.  When we are on large social networks it feels like you are at an online event, or an online party and although the marketing messages are geared to be personal, it still feels public.  Email on the other hand although it may be “one-to-many”, it feels more “personal”.  Especially if you add various personalization throughout the email like the person’s name, business name, etc.  This gives email marketing more of a stronger relationship building feel for a brand than other forms of online marketing.
  4. Strong Calls to Action  Email Marketing is also the best place to use strong calls to actions and to inspire your audience to take the next step with your company.  Whether that next step is purchasing, learning more, referring business or just having your company top of mind.  After all the end results of good marketing should be consistent exposure, which leads to  consistent sales.

21 Things You Must Do to Get Amazing Email Marketing Results (Part 3)

Posted on July 31, 2013. Filed under: Business, Business Development, Email Marketing, Email Results, Marketing, Uncategorized | Tags: , |

In my last post I discussed the importance of the content in your e-mail.  Once you’ve grown your list and have great content that you are sending out, you need to analyze your results!  Here are 7 tips on ways to analyze your e-mail marketing results:

  1. Test different days and times for sending your e-mail to see what works best for your list.  Even though there are suggested days and times for sending out your e-mail in order to get the best results, I recommend that you test different days and times because  every e-mail list is different.  After you test it out, you will have a better idea of what days and times work best for the people on your list.
  2. Analyze your e-mail results .  When analyzing your e-mail results, some of the key indicators you should be looking at are your open rates (what percentage of people from your e-mail list are actually opening your e-mail), review the click through rates (CTR).  The CTR will help you gauge how the content you place in your e-mail is working to engage your subscribers by indicating whether your subscribers are clicking the links within your e-mail in order to get more information.  In addition, you want to track your opt-outs to be sure that you are not losing a lot of people every time you send out an e-mail.  Lastly, be sure that you have the correct e-mail addresses for the contacts on your e-mail list by checking the bounces that are marked as invalid e-mail address.
  3. Make adjustments to your e-mail based on your analysis.  Once you have tested and analyzed your results, be sure to make adjustment to improve your results.  Those adjustments could include changing the day and time you send your e-mail, changing up the type of content you have in your e-mail, etc.
  4. Be consistent…..This is an area where I see many small business owners fall short.  If you have committed to do an e-newsletter, e-zine or e-lert, if you have a daily e-mail be sure to send it out every day, if you have a weekly e-mail be sure to send it out every week, etc.  Being consistent shows that your company is trustworthy, credible, and responsible, which are all characteristics of companies people like to do business with.
  5. Test different types of subject/headlines for your e-mail.  In addition to testing the right day and time to send your e-mail, you should also test different types of subject/headlines.  Some times changing the sound and feel of your subject line/headline can make a difference in your open rate.
  6. Keep the look and feel of your e-mail consistent with your brand.  If you have a set look and feel for your brand, keep the look and feel of your e-mail the same as the look and feel of your website, blog, social media platforms, etc.  you want your customers to have a similar experience no matter the platform that they are receiving information from you.
  7. Add relevant images to your e-mail.  People like visually appealing e-mails.  As the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words, so be sure to add relevant pictures in your e-mail to get your message across.

What techniques and ways do you use to analyze your e-mail efforts?

21 Things You Must Do to Get Amazing Email Marketing Results (Part 2)

Posted on July 29, 2013. Filed under: Business, Business Development, Email Marketing, Email Results, Marketing, Uncategorized | Tags: , , |

In the last post for 21 Things You Must Do to Get Amazing Email Marketing Results, I discussed the importance of consistently growing your opt-in e-mail list, for this post I will discuss the importance of the content in your e-mail.

Once you are consistently growing your e-mail list, you want to make sure that the content that you provide in your e-mails is valuable to your readers.  So how do you make sure your content is valuable?  Here are 7 tips to ensure you are creating engaging content:

  1.  Start with creating a great e-mail headline (better known as your e-mail subject line).  Make sure your headline is interesting and compelling enough for people to want to open your e-mail  (i.e. 7 reasons most people….., 5 tips to avoid……, etc.)
  2. Be sure to use existing content from your blog or website for the content in your e-mail.  Keep your content brief and to the point.  People don’t like to read long articles in e-mails, so keep it short and link the information back to your blog or website where people can get more information.
  3. Always add a Call to Action (CTA) somewhere in your e-mail.  A CTA encourages people to learn more about your business or to try your service or product (i.e. download my free e-book, sign-up for the next workshop, etc.)
  4. Be sure to link the content in your e-mail to additional information found on your website or blog.  This is also a great way to see what content your readers are more interested in, by finding out which articles they click on to read more.
  5. Make sure your content is 80% educational/entertaining and 20% salesy/promotional.  People don’t like to be sold to, but they love to be informed and educated, so be sure to inform/educate/entertain for the majority of your e-mail, and add a small portion of your e-mail as a chance to promote/sell your business.
  6. Add a discount or referral offer in your e-mail.  Offer your subscribers incentives for being on your list.  A coupon for a discount on your services, a special offer if they refer someone to you, a FREE download to your latest educational item, etc.
  7. Add social sharing links to your e-mail so people will be able to share your e-mail with the people in their networks

What type of content do you add to your e-mail to make it engaging?

Just as equally important as the content in your e-mail is analyzing the results of your e-mail marketing efforts.  The next blog post in this series will discuss the best ways to analyze your e-mail marketing results.  Stay tuned for the next blog post or click here to download the complete checklist of 21 Things You Must Do in Order to Get Amazing Results from Your Email Marketing!

21 Things You Must Do to Get Amazing Email Marketing Results (Part 1)

Posted on July 26, 2013. Filed under: Business, Business Development, Email Marketing, Email Results, Marketing | Tags: , , , , , |

If you are using email marketing to promote your business, or you are thinking about using email marketing to promote your business, then the first step to being successful in your email marketing efforts is to BUILD YOUR LIST:

The money is in your list and it is important for you to consistently build your e-mail list.  Here are 7 tips on how to successful build your e-mail list:

  1. Send an invitation to join your e-mail list to the contacts that you have e-mail addresses for INVITE them to opt-in to receive your e-mails, don’t just add your contacts to your e-mail list, make sure they have opted in (you don’t want to be a spammer- someone who consistently sends e-mails to individuals who did not request it).** A big pet peeve of mine is do not add individuals whom you met at a networking event to your e-mail list unless they have requested to join your list or they have opted in! **
  2. Offer a good incentive that people in your target market would be interested in receiving if they opt in to your e-mail list (i.e. FREE report, e-Book, white paper, checklist, etc.)
  3. Concentrate on QUALITY not just QUANTITY when it comes to your list size The size of your list doesn’t matter as much as the quality of the people on your list.** ideally you do want to grow your list into a large list with lots of quality individuals from your target market **
  4. Create an e-mail sign-up form and place it on your website, blog, social networks, etc.
  5. In order for your list to grow, you have to promote joining your list.  Promote joining your e-mail list on your social networks, e-mail, website, blog, etc.
  6. Don’t limit the promotion of joining your e-mail list to just your online activities, but also promote joining your e-mail list on your offline marketing material by including a QR Code that links to your e-mail sign up form on your business card, brochures, etc.
  7. Make it easy for people to join your email list by including easy joining methods like join via text message

What techniques and ways do you use for people to join your e-mail list?

Just as equally important as growing your e-mail list is the content in your e-mail.  The next blog post in this series will discuss how to create engaging content that will make people want to open your e-mails and give you business.  Stay tuned for the next blog post or click here to download the complete checklist of 21 Things You Must Do in Order to Get Amazing Results from Your Email Marketing!

3 C’s to Get Amazing Results from Email Marketing

Posted on July 8, 2013. Filed under: Business Development, Email Marketing, Email Results, Marketing, Uncategorized | Tags: , , |

Email MarketingEmail Marketing is a key element to online marketing for every small business.  However, being successful at Email Marketing can be a challenge.  Just like other areas of your small business marketing, you must have a strategy for success.  Here are 3 C’s to help you get amazing results from your email marketing.

3 “CON”s:

CONtacts-  Your email list is where the money is at.  It is important to make sure that the contacts on your e-mail list have opted-in to receive your e-mail (you don’t want to be a spammer-  sending e-mails to individuals who have not requested it).  Always remember that it’s not the size of your list, but the QUALITY of the contacts on your list.  It’s always better to have 50 interested individuals than 1000 uninterested individuals.

CONtent-  Most of us have heard the saying “Content is King”, but what does that really mean?  It means that the content that you send to your contacts needs to be informative, entertaining and/or engaging.  The QUALITY of your content is what makes the difference in whether people will open your e-mail, follow your company, or do business with you.

CONsistency-  It is super important to give your contacts your content on a consistent basis.  If you decided to have a monthly e-newsletter, then be sure to send it out every month.  If you publish a weekly e-mail be sure to send it out every week, or if you have a daily e-mail, be sure that your contacts receive your e-mail in their inbox on a daily basis.  Consistency is key, it shows that your company is reliable and trustworthy.

Bonus C:

The bonus C may not be a “CON”, but it is very important for every business to do, Compare.

Compare- Be sure to compare your results with the results of e-mail campaigns of others in your industry (most e-mail marketing providers have statistics of open and click through rates for various industries).  Also, be sure to compare your e-mail results from month to month.  Look at your open rates, click-through rates, opt-ins, opt-outs and more, to get a big picture of how you are doing with your e-mail campaigns.

5 Ways to Propel Your Email Marketing

Posted on February 7, 2013. Filed under: Email Marketing, Email Results, ESP, Marketing |

Do you stay connected to your customers and prospects on a regular basis?  Staying connected maintains your relationship and keeps your business top of mind.  A great way to do this is through Email Marketing.  Email marketing allows you to reach them in their email in-boxes on a regular basis.

Check out these tips below to propel your Email Marketing:

  • Build your Email List
You can start by collecting email addresses from your customers, clients, and prospects.  You can use both online and offline techniques as an email address capture method. Online techniques include having an email sign-up form on your website and an email sign-up link on your outgoing email messages.  Offline techniques can include having a Quick Response (QR) Code on your brochures or business cards that links to your email sign-up form and collecting email addresses on your order forms, or when people request information about your business, be sure to get their email address.
  • Select an Email Service Provider (ESP)
An ESP will allow you to create professional emails that will be delivered  into your customers and prospects’ in-boxes and can be branded to the look and feel of your business .  Some popular ESPs are:

Each one has its pros ands cons.  Some are FREE and others have FREE trial periods.  Do your research and select an EImageSP that works for you and your budget.  Check out my recent post, How to Pick an Email Marketing Service Provider to learn more.

  • Create a professional email with good content
As the saying goes, Content is King!  What you say in your email is what is most important, but before people can read what you have to say, they have to open your email which is the first hurdle.  Making a good subject line so people will want to open your e-mail will get you over that first hurdle.  Keeping your content condensed, which should be 80% educational or informative, and only 20% promoting your product or service helps to keep people engaged with your email.
  • Analyze the results
After you’ve grown your list and sent out some awesome emails with some great content, it is also important to check the numbers.  How many people actually opened your email, how many people actually clicked on the items in your email, etc.  Keeping track of these results are important so you know how you are doing and how to improve.
  • Consistently reach out to your customers, clients and prospects through email marketing.  A great way to stay top of mind is to send out a monthly e-zine or e-newsletter.

In summary, whether you are currently using email marketing for your business or you’re thinking about using it, the keys are to stay consistent and to provide useful content.
